Greatness Starts With a Goal - Global Goals Soccer Camp 2025

"What do great soccer players have in common?" This was the question Michael Arthur posed to youth during the Global Goals Soccer Camp.

As Founder and Director of Congregation of Black Naturalists (CBN), Michael led participants through goal-setting and growth mindset sessions designed to help them understand what it takes to improve, persevere, and achieve.

Using a youth-friendly framework adapted from SMART goal setting, Michael young athletes through setting goals that were specific, attainable, and achievable within a reasonable timeframe. Every participant had the opportunity to set a personal goal during the camp.

For many youth, this was their first experience using a structured framework to turn an aspiration into an actionable plan. With individual handouts, participants identified what they wanted to achieve, considered the steps needed to get there, reflected on why their goal mattered, and established a target for completion.

The lesson extended beyond soccer. Talent and practice matter, but so does knowing how to set a goal, work toward it, and recognize the progress made along the way.

A Growth Mindset: Turning Challenges Into Opportunities

Michael connected goal setting with another essential ingredient of greatness: a growth mindset.

When things get difficult, young people can interpret a challenge as proof that they cannot succeed—or as an opportunity to learn, adjust, and improve. The growth mindset session encouraged youth to recognize that mistakes are part of learning, skills develop with practice, and setbacks do not have to define what is possible.

Through an interactive handout, participants practiced reframing fixed-mindset statements such as “I can’t do this” into growth-oriented responses such as “I am still learning. I will keep trying.”

For young soccer players, this means responding to a missed shot, a difficult drill, or constructive feedback with a willingness to learn rather than giving up. It means understanding that improvement takes time and that trying a different approach can be part of progress.

Together, goal setting and growth mindset gave youth practical ways to approach challenges: identify what they want to achieve, make a plan, keep working when progress is difficult, and learn from the experience.

At CBN, greatness is not simply about being the best player today. It is about developing the mindset, habits, and life skills that help young people navigate challenges, pursue their goals, and continue growing long after they leave the soccer field. We aim to equip youth not just for the game, but for life.
